We are witnessing a fascinating paradox in artificial intelligence. The more powerful our language models become, the more they resemble what ancient philosophers called "learned ignorance" — they know so much that they cannot distinguish between what they actually know and what they merely appear to know.
This is not a technical problem. It is an epistemological one.
Large language models are trained on the entirety of human knowledge, yet this vastness becomes their weakness. They have learned to speak with authority about everything, including things that never existed.

This is where domain-specific intelligence becomes revolutionary. A small language model, trained exclusively on legal translations between English and Japanese, with deep understanding of both legal systems, doesn't suffer from the hubris of universal knowledge. It knows precisely what it knows — and more importantly, it knows the boundaries of its knowledge.
Custom-trained models for specific domains, language pairs, and cultural contexts represent something profound: a return to the kind of focused intelligence that built the institutions we rely on. Not scattered omniscience, but purposeful expertise.
The problem is more than just solving AI hallucinations. We have to rediscover what human expertise has always known: depth trumps breadth when stakes are high. The most valuable professionals are not those who dabble in everything, but those who master their specific domain while understanding its boundaries.
Perhaps the question is not how to make AI more human, but how to make it more like the best humans: deeply knowledgeable in their domain, humble about their limitations. This is where the real breakthrough lies — not in replacing human expertise, but in creating orchestrated intelligence where our AI partners know exactly when human mastery is irreplaceable.
